EXTENSION OF PIT ROAD, OTHER IMPROVEMENTS SPICE AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES' JUNE 27 MOSPORT ROUND INDIANAPOLIS

June 14, 1999 - The lengthening of pit road at Mosport International Raceway to accommodate a 39-car entry list is being completed this week in preparation for the June 27 American Le Mans Series Grand Prix at Mosport, the third round of the series' inaugural season, according to Executive Raceway Director Myles Brandt. The new area, which adds 250 feet of pit space in addition to the track's existing 450 feet, meets international standards with proper walls and other features.

" We've filled a ravine and now our pit exit is at Turn 1," Brandt said. "We've increased the pit road by 30 percent. Now, cars will enter the track at the double tunnel in Turn 1 instead of at the start-finish line."

The project was started in April after the huge entry list was foreseen, and is one of many improvements at the facility for competitors, officials and fans.

The track has a new race control tower and timing and scoring center, a new track intercom system and a totally revamped public-address system. Additionally, there are new bathrooms in the paddock and a new bathroom and showers in the family camping area and a new concession and souvenir stand at the Corner 2 area.

"So far, people are saying they're the best bathrooms in racing," Brandt said. "For this race, everything will be completely finished." In qualifying, competitors will be shooting at the track record of one minute, 9.775 seconds, 126.87 miles an hour set by Hans Stuck in a Porsche 962 in 1985 over the 10-turn, 2.459-mile (four kilometers) course.

In addition to the American Le Mans Series round, a long list of support events are scheduled on the road course and a full Saturday night card is scheduled for the Mosport short oval, which features an improved grandstand and new hospitality area, on June 26.
