BOWMANVILLE, ON – The battle for the 2001 Parts Canada Superbike Championship reaches a critical stage as the tour heads to Mosport International Raceway for its fifth round July 20-22.

Maple Ridge, BC’s Steve Crevier is poised to take control of the title battle with wins in three of the four races held so far on his Honda RC51, including the most recent event at Autodrome St-Eustache July 8.

With three rounds remaining he has a 46-point lead over Toronto’s Owen Weichel, 216-170. Sixty points are available at each event through qualifying and the feature race.

But the defending series champion will face his stiffest challenge yet at the high-speed Mosport road course.

Defending race winner Frank Trombino is coming off his best result of the year, a fourth at St-Eustache on his Yamaha YZF-R1. The Kleinburg, ON rider sits ninth in points with 69.

Also among the challengers is Rock Forest, QC’s Francis Martin, who has been Crevier’s biggest threat in the past two rounds on his Suzuki GSX-R1000. He is third in the standings, just two behind Weichel with 168.

Weichel, meanwhile, is the only rider to have beaten Crevier this season. He took his Kawasaki ZX-7RR to victory in the second round of the series at Calgary’s Race City Motorsport Park.

Crevier will also be hoping to place his stamp of authority on the Yoshimura 600 Sport Bike national support class. Riding a Honda CBR600F4i Crevier has scored three of a possible four wins in that category as well and leads Suzuki GSX-R600 rider Clint McBain of Calgary by 69 points, 215-146.

Laval, QC’s Jean-Francois Cyr is third in the standings with 134 points on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Thanks partly to wins in the first two races on his Yamaha YZF-R1 Trombino leads the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Open Sport Bike standings heading to Mosport. He has 182 points to the 160 of Honda CBR929RR rider Jeff Williams of Harrowsmith, ON and Martin’s 157.

Martin has triumphed in the last two races on his Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Qualifying on Friday, July 20 will set the front row for Sunday’s Parts Canada Superbike feature. The remainder of the field, as well as the line-ups for the Open Sport Bike and 600 Sport Bike classes, will be determined on Saturday, July 21.
